I often shoulder milling cutters advocate evaluating new cutting tools, but finding the time and resources to do this testing is not easy. The machine tools are busy. The workpieces are expensive.
For GKN Aerospace, the opportunity gravity turning inserts to test cutting tools recently came in the form of a sustainability-related research project. A much smaller facility, G&G Precision, found its opportunity in a pre-production order for a new part number. In both cases, seizing upon the opportunity to test cutters dramatically improved the shop’s knowledge of the best tools and parameters to use.
Where is your opportunity to test tools?

The sensitivity of probe depends on the used tungsten collimator. The basic sensitivity is determined by the standard collimator (40°). The sensitivity is shown in the figure - it's depending on the distance between lymph-node and probe tip. Tungsten articulatable hand-held probe’s sensitivity > 20,000 counts/s/MBq.
Carbide Threading Inserts
By increasing the dihedral angle the tungsten articulatable hand-held probe’s sensitivity increases significantly, while the spatial resolution gets worse.

Lyndex-Nikkens shrink fit toolholders are designed for optimum accuracy, rigidity and balance. The solid construction minimizes unbalance variations when changing cutting tools, the company says.
Used RCGT Insert in combination with a shrink fit unit, the toolholders rapidly heat up to expand the inside diameter of the holder. As the holder cools, thermal contraction exerts a uniform pressure that shrinks the diameter around the tool for uniform gripping. Cemented Carbide Inserts This process not only ensures accuracy, the company says, but it also allows for tool changes of less than 30 seconds. The separate shrink fit unit employs a direct, liquid-cooling method that quickly and safely cools tools, the company says.
The symmetrical, shrink fit holders are pre-balanced (to G2.5 at 40,000 rpm on all HSK32E/40E holders, to G2.5 at 20,000 rpm on all #40 taper/HSK63 holders and to G2.5 at 15,000 rpm on all #50 taper/HSK100 holders). According to the company, most of these holders can be balanced with the use of an optional balancing kit. The complete line is offered in both inch and metric sizes.

Sandvik Coromant is releasing two series of ceramic end mills for optimal performance in nickel-based alloys: The CoroMill 316 and the CoroMill Plura. RCGT Insert These brazed ceramic end mills are said to offer a more productive means of roughing ISO S materials compared to carbide milling cutters.
These end mills share the CC6060 grade designed for nickel alloy machining. The negative geometry provides a tough cutting edge. The six-flute geometry enables highly productive side milling operations, while the four-flute geometry eases face milling, according to the company. The choice between the two depends on machine conditions and the application. Those seeking solutions for difficult-to-reach applications or the extra flexibility of the exchangeable-head system can opt for the Carbide Threading Inserts CoroMill 316, while those requiring better stability are advised to select the CoroMill Plura.
According to Sandvik Coromant, ceramic tools retain their hardness at the high temperatures associated with milling heat-resistant superalloys (HRSAs). As a result, 20 to 30 times the speed can be achieved in comparison to solid-carbide tools, delivering considerable potential for increased productivity. A stable setup is advised without the use of coolant, as coolant would simply burn at such high temperatures.
Beyond shoulder milling and face milling, the new end mills can also be used for pocket milling, helical interpolation, ramping and slot milling.

A group of researchers from the Australian National University (Canberra) and the University of Wisconsin (Madison) has discovered that a single molecular layer L of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has a giant optical path length (OPL); in comparison to another monolayer material, graphene, the OPL of MoS2 is about 10 times greater.
Although this may seem like an esoteric result, it has a very practical consequence for photonics: as the researchers have demonstrated, just a few monolayers of MoS2 can be used to create what the researchers call the “world’s thinnest optical lens” only 6.3 nm thick. With a tungsten carbide weight diameter of about 20 μm, the concave MoS2 lens the researchers fabricated has a calculated focal length of −248 μm at a 535 nm wavelength.
For experimentation, the researchers transferred single- or few-layer MoS2 flakes onto a silicon wafer (under a microscope, regions of differing colors corresponded to layers of different thickness). To create the lens, they used a focused ion beam to mill a concave bowl shape, producing a continuous, curved OPL profile. The giant OPL arises from a corresponding giant elastic photon scattering efficiency.
The researchers discovered that the strength of the elastic interaction in the thin 2D MoS2 increases greatly with a growing refractive index as a result of the ultrathin-film geometry. For every layer thickness increase of 1 nm, the OPL increases by more than 50 nm. The researchers say that other high-index ultrathin-film transition-metal dichalcogenide 2D semiconductors (of which MoS2 is an example) are particularly well-suited for this approach.

The molybdenum powder, molybdenum oxide and ferro molybdenum prices in China are unchanged from the previous trading day on low trading activity but good sentiment of traders. In the molybdenum concentrate market, the market is operating steadily, and downstream users' demand is still tepid. However, due to the limited stock of raw materials, molybdenum companies are not in a hurry to sell products, waiting for the next round of offers.
In the ferro molybdenum market, the fundamentals have been strengthened compared to last week. Against the background of the upcoming month change and the support from Two Sessions, steel mills becomes active in inquiry and thus boost the confidence of ferro molybdenum manufacturers. The molybdenum chemical and its products market is stable. Under the influence of the favorable atmosphere in the upstream market and the state's encouragement of citizens' consumption, the enthusiasm for end customers to pick up goods has slightly recovered, and the market outlook is expected. Molybdenum is the ideal material for glass melting electrodes due to its good electrical and thermal conductivity, excellent corrosion and creep resistance. Generally, the diameter of electrode ranges from 10mm to 120mm, which is mainly depended on the current density.
To melt borosilicate glass, the most common diameter of electrode is 50mm. When the current density ranges between 0.42 A/cm2 and 0.49A/cm2, the electrodes do not need to be moved forward as they have no consumption. For vertical electrodes, whether the electrode to be continued in the furnace required to be evaluated when the density value reaches 0.8A/cm2.
For electric furnaces with a long furnace age (more than 4 years), the current density increases as the electrode is consumed. If the electrode is not ready to continue, the current density needs to be controlled at a lower value. Normally, there is little consumption for moly electrode when the current density runs below 0.6A/cm.
When molybdenum glass melting electrode is used to smelt soda lime glass and other low-resistance glasses that have a resistivity lower than 15Ω·cm, it is difficult to control the current density below 0.6A/cm2 because of its low viscosity and low resistivity. Therefore, electrodes with φ75mm diameter are often used. In addition, the electrodes will also have different degrees of loss during operation, so the electrodes must be made continuous. From the perspective of operating cost, the plate electrode consumes less and is more suitable for electrofusion of soda lime glass.
The conductive distance of the electrode has a direct impact on the service life of moly electrode. If the distance is too close, it will be in a low-voltage and high-current state during operation. This local high power will not only reduce the life of refractory materials, but also increase the electrode loss and bring defects to the product. In addition, if the current density value is too large, the destructive effect on the electrode will be even greater. Within the allowable range of voltage that the electric melting furnace Cemented Carbide Tips can withstand, the high-voltage and low-current operation scheme can improve efficiency on conditions that it must meet the requirements of melting process and operational safety.
