Tool Chuck’s Optimal Runout Achieved with Additive Manufacturing

Mapal’s HighTorque Chuck (HTC) with narrow contour combines the benefits of hydraulic expansion with 3-degree back taper. This fast feed milling inserts feature is accomplished via additive manufacturing, which enables the clamping range to be positioned very close to the chuck tip for an optimum radial runout of less than 3 microns at the location bore and less than 5 microns at 2.5×D as well as high shape accuracy and good vibration damping. The damping in the system reduces microstructure cracking at the cutting edge, which in turn ensures longer tool life and less strain on the machine spindle. Furthermore, Mapal explains, the additive process eliminates the need for the soldered joint that has been a limiting factor until now. This chuck shares the benefits of the standard HTC, including thermal stability. Operating temperature ranges to 338°F (170°C), promoting additional process reliability.

With benefits for moldmaking as well as automotive and aerospace applications, rod peeling inserts this chuck is designed for all machining operations in contour-critical areas.

The chuck is available in clamping diameters of 6, 8, 10 and 12 mm for HSK-A63 and SK-40 interfaces. Intermediate sleeves enable additional diameter ranges to be covered. In addition, the chuck is optionally available with a dynamically-balanced HSK connection.

Methods Machine Tools Opens Climate Controlled Precision Test Cut Facility

Methods gun drilling inserts gun drilling inserts Machine Tools’ new Precision Center in Massachusetts is said to be the first of its kind in North America for precision machining. The test cut center will enable Methods’ customers to arrive at accurate and efficient machining solutions for complex components, saving them trial and error in their operations.

Designed and built by Methods, the center offers a climate-controlled environment that monitors and maintains temperature, air pressure and humidity. To maintain environmental stability, the Precision Center features a secured airlock entrance and exit. The building also has meter-deep isolation pads with vertical and horizontal steel reinforcements for machining stability.

"North American manufacturers can send parts, tooling and material to our Precision Center without having to go outside slot milling cutters the country. Intricate, challenging, tight-tolerance and confidential test parts can be made right here in the U.S.,” says Jerry Rex, president and CEO.

Waterjet Cutting System for Compact Environments

Omax offers the model 1530 Maxiem JetCutting abrasive waterjet cutting center equipped with the company’s Intelli-Max software suite and direct-drive pump technology. bar peeling inserts The machine is capable of cutting components from materials including metal, plastic, glass, ceramics, stone and composites. Workpieces are cut directly from the plate with a single tool to reduce set-up time and material usage. Featuring a compact footprint with an X-Y travel measuring 122" × 62", the model is well-suited for smaller fabrication shops and metal service centers.

An electrically operated motorized Z axis enables precise nozzle positioning. The accessory provides 8.75" of travel and heads-up traverse to avoid obstacles. A "move all up” command enables the axis to quickly move the nozzle out of the way after toolpath completion. Operators can pre-program the axis using the Omax 3D Path Editor software to follow vertical contours of parts and obstacles, and also program it with most gun drilling inserts gun drilling inserts other CAD/CAM software through a custom postprocessor.

The company will also showcase the 80X JetMachining bridge-style waterjet cutting center.

GMTA Gear Cutting System Features Modular Design

German Machine Tools of America’s (GMTA) Profilator 300-V modular machine platform is equipped with one Carbide Turning Inserts or two workpiece spindles in a compact design. It offers maximum flexibility due to modular design and is individually configurable for various machining processes (for example, scudding, hobbing, cycloidal milling, pointing, chamfering and deburring). Linear drives in the X- and Y-axis, as well as a torque drive in the A-axis offers high machine dynamics for short cycle times and maximum accuracy/low costs.  High machine rigidity is available for hard scudding of inner and outer diameters.

Additional features include an intuitive user interface for easy setup and programming and is Industry 4.0 ready (optionally equipped with additional sensors). Various automation concepts are easily adaptable. The 300-V is easy to set up and maintain due to the "walk-in” machining area. An optional tool charger is available for maximum Carbide Drilling Inserts machining efficiency.

All Profilator machines are designed for dry machining, providing a machining area with no coolant and no coolant mist. The inverted, vertical spindle(s) enable free chip fall into the central chip conveyor at the bottom, while no coolant means no washing of the workpiece is required and the lack of coolant mist signifies an extraction system isn’t needed.

Milling Cutter Provides Multiple Cutting Edges

Secos new Square 6 shoulder milling cutter uses trigonal inserts with six cutting edges to boost productivity and lower the cost per insert edge. The inserts are available with three insert geometries and three pitches to allow the tool to be used for a variety of general machining operations, such as face milling, contouring, plunging, slotting and shoulder milling in steels, cast irons and hard materials. This flexibility allows users to carry less tooling inventory and reduce tool changes to boost productivity, the company says.

The cutter slot milling cutters bodies come in diameters ranging from 40 to 160 mm. The bodies are nickel coated to extend tool life and are pre-hardened to help achieve tight machining tolerances for precision parts. The bodies are offered in normal pitch in addition to coarse pitch for unstable conditions and close pitch for rugged machine tools.

Inserts can be set to achieve a true 90-degree setting angle that creates true 90-degree walls without secondary operations. The inserts lock into place with a center screw located in the same direction as the cutting forces. Insert geometries include ME09 for deep hole drilling inserts stainless steel, M13 for steel and cast iron and MD15 for hard materials requiring high cutting speeds. Each of the insert styles features two different corner radii. An R0.8 radius is appropriate for normal conditions while the R1.6 is designed for tougher cutting applications.

Watch for Opportunities to Test Tools

I often shoulder milling cutters advocate evaluating new cutting tools, but finding the time and resources to do this testing is not easy. The machine tools are busy. The workpieces are expensive.

For GKN Aerospace, the opportunity gravity turning inserts to test cutting tools recently came in the form of a sustainability-related research project. A much smaller facility, G&G Precision, found its opportunity in a pre-production order for a new part number. In both cases, seizing upon the opportunity to test cutters dramatically improved the shop’s knowledge of the best tools and parameters to use.

Where is your opportunity to test tools?

Sensitivity Date of Tungsten Articulatable Hand

The sensitivity of probe depends on the used tungsten collimator. The basic sensitivity is determined by the standard collimator (40°). The sensitivity is shown in the figure - it's depending on the distance between lymph-node and probe tip. Tungsten articulatable hand-held probe’s sensitivity > 20,000 counts/s/MBq.

By increasing the dihedral angle the tungsten articulatable hand-held probe’s sensitivity increases significantly, while the spatial resolution gets worse.
