CNC Lathe Turns Long Shaft Workpieces

Mazak’s heavy-duty Slant Turn Nexus 550 turning center is capable of turning large workpieces such as oilfield pipes, pipeline control valves and power-generating components for the aerospace, oil and gas, coal, and nuclear industries. The machine offers a maximum swing of 40.94" and is available with beds measuring 80", 120" and 160" in length for cutting workpieces as long as 158.8". An Carbide Milling Inserts NC-programmable tailstock and optional automatic steady rest provide controlled support for short and long workpieces, the company says.

The solid headstock features a 10.8"-diameter (274.3-mm-diamater) bore and a 1,000-rpm, 60-hp spindle that generates as much as 5,163 foot-pounds of torque. The spindle accommodates a 21" chuck size. The tailstocks retract to a known position through the part program and its center makes contact with the workpiece for consistent holding pressure. The tailstock is also capable of drilling holes on a shaft centerline due to its positive independent drive system, providing process versatility. The 12-position non-lift drum turret with rapid tool indexing is designed for minimal interference with boring bars during turning. The turret enables quickly gun drilling inserts loading and unloading VDI-type toolholders by turning one bolt for faster tool setups.

The turning center is equipped with Mazak’s Matrix Nexus 2 CNC with both conversational programming and EIA/ISO formatted programming. According to the company, the control provides realistic 3D cycle simulation to verify the machining cycle and check for machine interferences, reducing the need for test cuts.

Grainger Offers Round Tool Reconditioning

Grainger (Orlando, Florida), a supplier of maintenance, repair gun drilling inserts and operating (MRO) products, announced a new cutting tool reconditioning Carbide Insert for Cast Iron service during the 2017 #GraingerShow.

Rather than discarding worn end mills and drill bits, manufacturers can reduce waste and save on the cost of new tooling by repairing used cutting edges back to original specification. The service focuses on high-speed steel and carbide round tooling used on CNC machines as well as manual mills and lathes.

"While most regrind services are offered by local shops, our solution provides customers with a single source for new and reconditioned tooling with a consistency of service and invoicing nationwide,” says Brad Laux, director of metalworking strategy.

Grainger carries nearly 300,000 products for metalworking processes, including cutting tools, precision measuring, welding and abrasives.

Software Update Includes Tool to Ease Job Cost Calculation

Hypertherm has released version 11.1 of its ProNest 2015 CAD/CAM software featuring a quoting tool that can calculate Lathe Inserts per-part and total job costs, among other updates. This tool is ideal for job shops, metal service centers and other fabricators who need to quote work to external customers. In addition to using baseline material and production costs, the tool is capable of including secondary operations as well as markups or discounts for certain customers and jobs in the final cost calculation.

This version also includes enhancements supporting waterjet cutting, such as the ability to apply four waterjet pierce types (dynamic, circle, wiggle and stationary) automatically through the use of embedded process parameters. The software applies the right pierce type and duration based on lead length, material type and thickness, and the available space around the pierce site, all without the need for programmer input. A "quality colors” slot milling cutters feature enables programmers to color-code parts based on quality values while in 2D CAD mode or while using ProNest’s Advanced Edit feature. Other enhancements include interior cut-up for laser cutting, improved SolidWorks assembly import, cut process class selection, and material mapping by grade and type.

Big Kaiser's Twin Cutter Boring Tools Make Larger Holes

According to Big Kaiser, limitations of using milling tools to prepare holes for finishing become apparent as hole depth and volume increase. Designed to address these limitations, the company’s 319SW Twin Cutter series of boring heads can machine holes ranging in diameter from 0.787" to 8.000" as well as perform rough boring and semi-finishing operations. These tools can also eliminate having to make multiple passes on the same bore, the company says, and enable the use of existing smaller tools to create a starting hole. Sometimes, for example, cast parts have more material to remove than was initially expected. Being able to balance- or step-cut with the same boring head helps to minimize tooling and cycle times, says Big Kaiser.

Accessory insert holders enable the Twin Cutter series to Cemented Carbide Inserts perform auxiliary operations not normally associated with this type of tooling. For example, some parts require several bores to be machined in line with a blended angle in between. Insert holders with an adjustable insert cartridge allow completion of the bore while producing the blend angle in one pass, thus eliminating the need for follow-up tooling such as an angled milling cutter. Back-boring holders can even eliminate the need for expensive dedicated special tools, and face grooving holders allow plunge cutting rather than milling, for a APMT Insert better surface finish, the company explains.
