Types of Surge Arresters And The Process in Which These Arresters Work

A Surge Arrester is a strong device that protects the electrical equipments from high voltage transients which are caused by external or internal events. External events are those that are caused by lightning and internal events are those that are caused due to switching. These devices protect the equipments that are installed in power stations and distribution systems. In this article some of the types of arresters and the process how they work are discussed.

How do the arresters work?

Surge Arrester Manufacturers make it very clear to their customers WCMT Insert that the arrester that they design cannot protect the equipments that are struck by direct lightning. Rather these arresters can protect the equipments from the electrical transients caused as a result of a lightning that occurs near the conductor. Ground currents caused due to lighting strikes pass over the conductors that are buried underground. These then emit electrical transients which propagate towards another end of the conductor placed above the ground.

Similar transients as induced by lightning, for example from a High Voltage Surge Arresters may be also diverted safely to the ground. But continuous over currents cannot be protected by these arrester devices. Thus there are limitations in the process in which these arresters work.

Types of Arresters

Signal ArresterIndexable Inserts

These types of arresters are used in communication systems like fax machines, phones and DDN lines. Computer modems also have these arresters in order to protect the modem from electrical transients. These arresters also protect process control circuits.

Coaxial cable arrester

Coaxial cables use these kinds of arresters to make the wireless transmission faster and rule out any kind of hindrances caused due to lightening strikes. The receiving and transmission systems in wireless communications sometimes break down due to lightning strikes. Installing an arrester protects the cables and provides smooth communication even after a hazardous lightening.

Feeder Arrester

With the advent of technology and shortage of time people are getting more inclined towards electronic devices. Electronic devices like microwave and washing machines save time and labor to a greater extent. But without a proper feeder arrester these electronic devices are more prone to lighting strikes that may damage these devices.

Magnetic Valve Arrester

These kinds of arresters can protect the generators that work on AC current from the electrical transients emitted after lightning strikes. Motor insulation can also be protected against lightning strikes by installing these kinds of arresters. The Surge Arrester Suppliers are responsible for supplying these high end arresters to power stations to avoid any mishaps.
